The Wisdom of Sundays

I was so excited about Oprah’s new book, The Wisdom of Sundays, I pre-ordered it months in advance. And let me tell you, it does not disappoint!

It is a beautifully bound compilation of bite-sized spiritual insights from thought leaders around the globe. Oprah takes what she calls “AHA” moments from Super Soul conversations over the last six years and divides them into ten thought-provoking chapters.

If you are not familiar with Super Soul Sunday, it is Oprah’s weekly talk show that first aired on October 16, 2011, on the OWN channel. The show’s format has her in a casual outdoor sit-down conversation with philosophers, motivational speakers, spiritual leaders, and authors.

All of us are seeking the same thing. We share the desire to fulfill the highest, truest expression of ourselves as human beings. –Oprah

Each chapter covers a different aspect of awareness such as: “Awakening,” “Intention,” “Mindfulness,” and “Forgiveness.” A small essay written by Oprah introduces each chapter’s topic and discusses the message through her own AHA moments. Then the next 20-30 pages enfold into a succession of quotes from influential thinkers such as Gary Zukav, Iyanla Vanzant, Eckhart Tolle, Wayne Dyer, Elizabeth Gilbert, and dozens more.

As I began reading, I realized that this is the kind of book that needs to be slowly absorbed – not hastily read to get to the end. I took my time, absorbed each page, journaled, and reflected. I finished the book days ago and still find myself going back and rereading parts of it.

To complement the wisdom within the pages are gorgeous photos of Oprah’s home in Santa Barbara, California, where she says, “she feel[s] the presence of God, and the connection to All that is greater than myself, most deeply.”

Why are you here? That’s the ultimate question that you get to answer with every action, thought, and feeling. There is a calling on your life. What will be your answer? –Oprah

As one of Oprah’s Favorite Things this holiday season, I would say The Wisdom of Sundays is my absolute favorite item. This is a perfect gift for yourself and someone special in your life.
