Solo: A Star Wars Story is a faithful installment to the Star Wars franchise!
The Star Wars character Han Solo was first introduced to movie audiences in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope as a cocky and funny foil to the hero Luke Skywalker. The iconic character, originally played by the equally iconic Harrison Ford, gets his own movie that explains how he met his co-pilot Chewbacca and how he acquired the Millennium Falcon.
In the sequence of the Star Wars universe, this movie takes place before Rogue One and after Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
Solo: A Star Wars Story begins on the dystopian planet Corellia, where Han (Alden Ehrenreich) and his girlfriend Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke) attempt to escape by bribing an officer with coaxium – a potent and valuable hyperspace fuel.
Han is seen as a brash and arrogant young man who wants nothing more than to be a pilot and seek his next adventure.
Along the way, he meets and saves Chewbacca from a primitive existence and meets the suave and sophisticated Lando Calrissian, played by Donald Glover. Han then gains the Millenium Falcon in a most unorthodox way and joins forces with Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson) and his wife Val (Thandie Newton).
One of my favorite characters is Lando’s droid, L3-37, a robot who is a staunch believer in robotic rights and provides humor to the story.
I won’t give anything away, but I will say that this is a nail biting adventure that kicks off immediately and doesn’t stop until it’s over.
There’s also a huge plot twist when a classic character makes a shocking appearance and a massive betrayal occurs. I actually heard an audible gasp from the audience!
Of course, this leads us to wonder if there will be a sequel.
Ron Howard did an excellent job of directing this installment of the backstory to one of the most memorable Star Wars characters.
