A few days ago, I saw the advanced screening of Disneynature’s Penguins, and it definitely exceeded my expectations. My 11-year old son also loved it!
The movie showcases a 5-year-old Adelie penguin named Steve who is looking for a mate. Most importantly, the quest takes place during Antarctica’s spring and features Steve’s treacherous journey. Steve tries to find a life partner, build a nest, and start a family while fighting predators and a harsh environment.
Also, Ed Helms (The Office, The Hangover) narrates the movie and is the perfect voice for Steve. He gives life to the story and, along with the music, made the entire theatre laugh and cheer for Steve.
Furthermore, the cinematography is breathtaking and allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty of Antarctica. The camera crew shot for a total of nearly 900 camera days by foot, boats, helicopters, and underwater.
The crew withstood freezing temperatures and katabatic winds that twice topped 150 miles per hour. It was an unforgiving environment that took place in such remote areas that some places took up to two weeks to access! Temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Fahrenheit on several occasions.
Besides the ruthless weather, Steve meets many challenges along the way, including leopard seals and killer whales to name a few.
Finally, with its G rating, Penguins is great entertainment for the entire family!
