What did you want to be when you were a little girl?
In the second grade, I wanted to be a nurse. Third grade, an astronaut. Fourth grade, a fourth grade teacher. None of those technically panned out, but they made for some good outfits on Career Day!
What are some different jobs you’ve had in your life?
Oh, this is a good one, but among the highlights, I was once a security guard for an eight-foot tall robot at the Oregon State Fair. Slightly less exciting, I was also a server, a lifeguard and a barista, and then as a grown-up, a high school English teacher and a non-profit outreach director.
What do you work toward in your spare time?
Honestly, I work toward being present in the moment, which is somewhat of an oxymoron for actually “working toward.” But I think life is most found when we embrace the present moment, whether we’re working, playing or just being with the people and scenarios around us …and then, when I’m actually working on a writing piece, for example, it’s amazing how those moments of being present find their way into story!
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Night owl, all the way.
What are you most proud of?
Having written (and rewritten …and rewritten) a book that will hit bookshelves nationwide on February 5, 2019. The Color of Life: A Journey Toward Love and Racial Justice is a memoir of my journey as a white woman into issues of race – including an interracial marriage to the son of black icon, James Meredith, and becoming a parent to our two young mixed-race boys. It’s a topic I’m extremely passionate about and don’t think there’s a better time in our country for it to hit bookshelves than now!
What are you known for?
Well, as a high school student I was known for being prom queen and the lead girl singer of an unknown indie garage band called Captain Verbash and the Continuum. Now, I’m known for being a friend, a wife and a mother, and occasionally a writer, speaker and activist who isn’t afraid to make loud her voice in various spaces around the Internet.
What inspires you?
Today, the stories of immigrant and refugee brothers and sisters in this country who are fighting for basic human dignity; when I see mothers and fathers torn apart from their children, my heart grieves, yet the collective cries for mercy and justice on their behalf give me a deep sense of hope, and I am inspired to keep moving forward in this work.
Tell me something about you that most people don’t know.
Give me all the scraps in your pantry, and I’ll hodgepodge an edible meal together. Because I mostly eat a gluten-free and sugar-free diet, I’ve learned how to make substitutions in the kitchen – I’m not saying said substitutions are always mouth-watering bits of perfection, but they’re generally …edible. 😉
Why did you apply to be an O Mag Insider?
I’ve long been a fan of Oprah and of the movement of wholeness and empowerment behind her magazine forever. I didn’t think I’d stand much of a chance because I haven’t done that much by way of product promotion, but then, voila! It happened. And I couldn’t be happier to be part of the crew.
How do you live your best life?
Lately, I’ve been learning the art of self-care. For too long I believed self-care indulgent, made up of bubble baths and bonbons, and sure, taking care of yourself might look like that sometimes …but it also might look like learning to say “no” or taking time to rest and not produce.
What are you reading now?
What’s a day in the life of Cara Meredith like?
Well, now that it’s summer, everything is awry since I have two young boys who are three and five years old. This week, it’s looked like cranking out an article on immigration reform while they attend magician’s camp (the latter certainly more fun than the former, although I’d argue both are necessary). During the school year, I tend to write one or two articles a week, post on my blog and prepare for various upcoming speaking engagements.
