Meet O Mag Insider – Christine Mulhearne!

Age: 38

Occupation: Advertising Style Director at O, The Oprah Magazine

What did you want to be when you were a little girl?

I wanted to be in some sort of job with a microphone. My parent had me on video at five years old singing “There She Is, Miss America” in my backyard singing into a hose while I made my grand entrance. I wonder if that set the tone for what was to come…

What are some different jobs you’ve had in your life?

Before Magazine, I worked at O at Home (O’s Shelter Publication), Bon Appétit Magazine, and Luxury SpaFinder Magazine & Spa I was the West Coast Sales Manager, so I would have the really tough job of meeting with all of the stunning hotel/spa properties to sell them into the magazine and website. Did I mention my meetings were on the west coast and included all of the gorgeous spas in sunny California like The Montage Laguna Beach and Auberge de Soleil? And one day, I had just come back from a cross country trip and my boss told me they wanted me to speak at a seminar…in…Hawaii!! I about fell off my chair, how lucky was I? A lesson to my younger self is to enjoy these kinds of experiences more and live in the moment! When I look back now, I wish that I hadn’t stressed so much about the work. I was given such an exciting experience and should have enjoyed it more. I was living my best life and didn’t even know it!

What do you work toward in your spare time?

I work towards finding my purpose.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Morning person but only after I have had my coffee. Alone. A night owl? Please, this girl is in bed by 10pm every night!

What are you most proud of?

My divorce. It was one of the scariest decisions of my life. I knew it was going to be best in the long run but I was terrified in that moment and for the next year. There was fear of breaking up my family, the effect this would have on my son (who was three at the time), the stress of how I was going to pay the mortgage on a house that two people used to pay for, the fear of giving up my job-share and going back to work on my own since I could no longer afford to stay home for two days. There was also the embarrassment and humiliation of having to tell my friends and family that I could no longer make my marriage work. Then, there was the day that I signed back on to social media (after deleting my profiles for a year) and changing my “relationship status” from “married” to “divorced” on Facebook. I felt like the biggest failure.

But after two years, when the dust settled and I began to feel confident with my decision, I was able to start my life over. I held on to the qualities about me that I loved and released the qualities that I no longer wanted to be a part of my life.

The reason that I am most proud of my divorce is because of what that process showed me about myself. I learned that it is never too late to change your mind about what you want in your life, that it’s ok to make a mistake and let go of someone or something that no longer works for you. What I am MOST proud of is that I am showing my son James that his mom is a smart and hard working woman!! He watches me go to work at a high powered job and sees the excitement and enthusiasm I have for what I do. I don’t complain about having to leave him and go earn my paycheck, I want him to see that everyone has a talent and it’s important to find it and live a happy life. I hope he sees that his mom loves what she does and how happy she is. And that is something he should aspire to!

What are you known for?

My loud voice and optimistic and enthusiastic personality. Along with my constant use of hand motions while I talk. I’m not embarrassed when people in the office tell me that they can hear me on the other side of the room. I own it!

What inspires you?

Women who have been through tough challenges and life changes and come out on the other side with renewed sense of who they are! What is better than seeing other women be resilient and come back as a bad ass? They are my heroes!

Tell me something about you that most people don’t know.

That I am the most sensitive soul on the planet. Most people are surprised because my personality is a little loud and over the top. I might look confident, (some days I am), but I take everything to heart. And I was born with an extra amount of empathy, so when someone is having a bad day or tough time, I feel that energy like it’s my own.

Why did you apply to be an O Mag Insider?

Because I knew it was the next step in my personal life journey and development towards finding my true life’s purpose. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I work at OI know I am supposed to be here both personally and professionally. Live Your Best Life isn’t just a tag line I sell our advertisers, it is a true message that I have needed to hear every day for the past 10 years to help me live the life I am destined to live. So, with the O Insiders, it was a no brainer to want to join and share what I have learned from the brand on a personal level.

And, I was in search of a new tribe! I didn’t know it at the time, but I was in desperate need of women who were supportive, uplifting, encouraging and supportive. This group of women, who truly want to help and see other women be their best, is the greatest gift that I ever could have received. And yes, now I am crying at my desk as I write this!

How do you live your best life?

By trying to embrace, love and use my special talents to help serve others. I used to think “service” meant volunteering or working with places like Habitat for Humanity. What I have learned is that being of service is using whatever magic you have been given and using it to help others. For me, that means taking my presenting skills from my current sales job at O (the love of a microphone), adding in my acting, theater, and stand-up experience (the love of storytelling) and combining that with the sensitive side of my personality (the love of caring TOO much) – to help comfort and encourage other people through their journey. Living Your Best Life, to me, means acknowledging that you are here to help others, discover your special talent, and try to be the best version of yourself that you could have ever imagined!

What’s a day in the life of Christine Mulhearne like?

No one day is ever the same which is exciting! My day starts with making my son breakfast and finding cartoons so that I can get my makeup on and big hair going for work. I drop my son off at the neighbors who put him on the bus for me. I have an hour and a half commute to work (drive, a train, and two subways) but I thoroughly enjoy my 40 minute train ride because I get to drink coffee and enjoy some alone time. Once I’m in the office, all the chaos can begin! Sometimes I am running from one meeting to the next – maybe I’m meeting with my Marketing partner about program elements that we want to pitch to one of my advertisers like Chico’s, or we are on a conference call with Holland America talking about next steps for the cruise. Or, I am out on sales call meeting with brands like Dove and telling them the importance of running in our May Beauty issue to support their new skin care series. When I’m in the office, I can be found eating and drinking all of the cakes, goodies, and cocktails that circulate our floor every day. I have no self-control!
