What did you want to be when you were a little girl?
The first time I was able to play with my dad’s old 35mm camera and realized people were able to take photos as their job, I decided I wanted to be a photographer.
What are some different jobs you’ve had in your life?
Oh wow, so many! I was an extra (background) in Mean Girls, I was a lifeguard at an amusement park, a waitress at fine-dining restaurants, I ran a skateboard/art camp for a while, and was a photographer assistant in Toronto.
What do you work toward in your spare time?
I skateboard and am learning to surf and mountain bike. I also really love refinishing furniture and home decorating/improvement.
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Both. I am a big fan of the siesta ; >
What are you most proud of?
Learning to snowmobile in the mountains and winning an X-Games Gold medal.
What inspires you?
I am also inspired by a new challenge, a solid adventure, and anything that gets me outside and into the mountains.
Tell me something about you that most people don’t know.
I have a serious passion for fine art and conceptual art. After university, my work even acquired some international awards. My goal in the next three years is to produce another conceptual photography series, even though no one has seen that side of my work in almost 10 years. I also really want to be a mom.

Why did you apply to be an O Mag Insider?
When I was a kid, I would watch Oprah everyday after school. I am also a magazine junkie (hence being a photographer), so I loved when Oprah started O Magazine. Then, last fall, I was dealing with the ramifications of some difficult personal issues. I was sexually assaulted by a counselor I was seeing and had taken him to court and charged him and was struggling to get over the shame and guilt associated with the whole process. That is when I came across OWN on YouTube and realized how difficult Oprah’s past was and that she had gone through so much more than me and kicked some serious arse anyway! I was also feeling alienated being one, of very few women, in an extremely competitive male-dominated industry. That is when I came across the O Mag Insiders and thought of how amazing it would to be a part of such a rad tribe of incredibly inspiring badass woman!
How do you live your best life?
I am always pushing myself to follow my gut and do what inspires me no matter what all the naysayers say. And I try to do all of it with a positive, easy-going attitude to make sure everyone around me also has the best time possible in the process.

What’s a day in the life of Erin Hogue like?
Everyday is different and varies depending on the season and where I am in the world. In the summer, I generally wake up around 5am, work for a couple hours, then get my body moving (skateboarding, surfing, yoga, running, crossfit, swimming). Come home, eat, shower, then either go to the studio or a café to do some more work. I usually have a little late afternoon siesta before meeting up with friends for dinner, then a little more work/editing before bed.
