Occupation: Registered Nurse and Freelance Writer
What did you want to be when you were a little girl?
An actress or a vet
What are some different jobs you’ve had in your life?
OMG, I have had so many jobs. As a kid growing up, I worked in Macy’s Herald Square in NYC at Christmas which was insanely busy. I’ve worked at ice cream shops, a bakery, clothing stores. My first real job was working at RCA Records in artist development/tour marketing – what a great time that was. I did publicity at Mercury Records and managed a famous recording studio in Soho for years (my favorite job ever). I also worked in publicity at L’Oreal. I’ve spent the past 13 years working as a psychiatric nurse.
What do you work toward in your spare time?
I am slowly writing a memoir (a dark comedy).
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
I should be a morning person since I have to wake up so early for work, but I hate waking up early. My creative juices start flowing in the middle of the night!
What are you most proud of?
Being the first college graduate in my family
What are you known for?
Speaking my mind 🙂
What inspires you?
Many, many people inspire me. My mother for sure. She has been by my side during my cancer and it’s aftermath for 8 years now. She stays with me day and night when I am in the hospital. Her love for her children is inspiring. I am also inspired by the nurses and doctors who have saved my life multiple times, many times when I didn’t want to continue. Other people who I have met in the hospital are a huge inspiration. One time I was being discharged from a month-long hospitalization, and I was being tube fed, weighed less than 90 lbs, and was feeling sorry for myself. I didn’t want to live anymore. As I was being pushed in the wheelchair to the lobby to wait for our car to pick us up, I passed by a man in a wheelchair. He had no arms or legs, and he gave me the biggest smile and had such brightness in his eyes. I will never forget that. I thought if he is happy, I have no reason to feel sorry for myself. I can picture his face to this day.
Tell me something about you that most people don’t know.
Since, 1990 I’ve been obsessed with Carmex, I mean really truly obsessed. I have them scattered all over the apartment, in all my purses, I leave some at work. If for some reason, I’m out and don’t have one, I have to stop what I’m doing and go to the nearest pharmacy and get one. Hahaha. Only my best friends know about this quirk!
Why did you apply to be an O Mag Insider?
I applied to be an Insider because I have been a fan of Oprah since her show first aired. O Mag is uplifting, inspiring, and it’s the only magazine I read from cover to cover. The feeling of the magazine, well, it’s just good vibes all around! To be a small part of that is such an honor.
How do you live your best life?
I live my best life by being appreciative of what I have each day. By helping others when I can. I hope I can inspire others to keep going when they are on the verge of giving up. I take chances. I talk to everyone I meet. Life has so much to offer, it’s a beautiful thing.
What are you reading now?
The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn ( a thriller, my favorite type of book)
What’s a day in the life of Liz Montgomery like?
If I am working at the hospital, it starts at 5:45AM. I take the quickest shower possible, eat a bowl of cereal and coffee, walk the dog, and hop in an Uber to work. I’m there from about 7:45AM and return home that night at about 9:15PM, take the dog out, maybe eat something small, and crash hard! If I’m not working I leisurely get up. Listen to some Esther Hicks, while eating breakfast. Take the dog out for a longer walk. I meet friends for lunch, walk around the city if it’s nice out. Browse the shops. Make plans for happy hour (again I’m a very weather permitting type of person, I love the heat). Have dinner somewhere with friends. Come home and write for a few hours and fall asleep. When I’m lucky enough to have that type of day, it is my favorite! No matter the day, I wake up every morning and say out loud, “Thank you for this beautiful day!”
