Occupation: Content Creator, Entrepreneur & Founder of Frosted Blog
What did you want to be when you were a little girl?
A news anchor. When I was growing up we didn’t have cable; the news was one of the few things we watched. I remember thinking that the female anchor for our local news station seemed so smart and glamorous. I wanted to be just like her.
What are some different jobs you’ve had in your life?
I was a bartender all through college and loved it so much I kept it as a side-hustle throughout my twenties. It’s how I met my husband, and it taught me so much about how to read people and how to relate to them. In 2009, I started a boutique event design business, creating over-the-top kids’ parties. I love kids, and I loved bringing their wildest dreams to life. Through the years, I created hundreds of parties, every theme you could imagine from princesses and pirates to Alice in Wonderland and Harry Potter. I loved it so much, but knew that once I had a child it would be very hard to devote my weekends to someone else. I started a blog to share photos of my work and curate ideas and inspiration before social media existed. When Pinterest came along, my little blog started to get tons of traffic and really took off.
As my company grew, I taught myself several other trades that helped shape my current career – photography, graphic design, web design, social media, and business. I’ve always been very curious and determined to figure things out on my own.
What do you work toward in your spare time?
It’s an ever-changing list. Sometimes it’s a new project or business idea. Other times I’m focused on teaching myself a new skill or keeping up with new trends.
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Definitely a night owl. Mornings are rough for me; it takes awhile for my brain to turn on. I’m most creative and inspired at night, and I love the quiet hours after everyone else has gone to sleep.
What are you most proud of?
Being a mom. It’s not the most unique answer I’m sure, but it’s honestly what I’m most proud of and most passionate about. Having my son taught me so much about myself and gave me the courage and confidence to dream bigger than I’d ever imagined. He also taught me to live in the moment and treasure the simple things.
What are you known for?
Probably talking a mile a minute, lol! I’m a fast-talker and when I get excited about something, it all comes out at once.
What inspires you?
People who have lived through good and bad times. I love hearing what shaped someone’s path, what made them who they are today. I’m an empath, and I truly feel connected to the people I come across everyday. It inspires me to find ways to help others, to tell their stories, and to tell my own in a way that makes people feel something.
Tell me something about you that most people don’t know.
I have ADHD. I’ve been much more open about it the past couple of years, but for the longest time I thought that it meant something was wrong with me. I didn’t understand why I couldn’t get my brain to turn on and behave like others. After years of shame, exhaustion, and depression, I finally got professional help, and it was life-changing! Now that I’ve learned ways to cope and work with my ADHD, I no longer see it as a fault but more of a gift. It’s part of what makes me so creative and allows me to think outside of the box.
Why did you apply to be an O Mag Insider?
I grew up watching Oprah in the afternoons. I loved her show and the way she connected to everyone, from celebrities to average, everyday people. I’ve loved reading O Magazine since it launched, so when I read about the O Mag Insiders search, I was so excited to send in my application. I crossed my fingers and sent my wish out into the universe. Needless to say, I was beyond excited to find out I was accepted!
How do you live your best life?
By practicing gratitude and kindness every day. I try to focus on simple habits like getting enough sleep, drinking water, and doing yoga whenever I can. Beyond that, I’m very mindful of living in the moment. I try to be present with the people I spend time with, and I keep an open mind and an open heart.
What are you reading now?
Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life by Thích Nhất Hạnh. I started reading his work after listening to Oprah’s Super Soul podcast conversation. I loved his ideas on how to practice being more mindful and finding happiness within yourself. He also shares important teachings on how building a community can bring you joy and help you realize your true purpose in life. His next book is on my nightstand and I’m excited to read it as well–Happy Teachers Change the World: A Guide for Cultivating Mindfulness in Education.
What’s a day in the life of Misty Nelson like?
My alarm goes off at 7 and after getting dressed and eating breakfast, we set-off to start our day. I drop my son off at preschool, run errands, and then spend a few hours on work. Everyday is different; some days I’m setting up a photo shoot or creating video content, other days I’m on my laptop answering emails and editing. I love that my job allows me to work from home or anywhere I want to be. We get to work with lots of brands we love, so often I’m styling outfits and home décor or sharing a new product and showing creative ways to use it. We also share a lot of family travel content on the blog, so it’s fun to get to visit new places. I pick my son up from preschool in the afternoon and spend the hours until bedtime with him. Family time is more important than anything else to me, especially right now while my son is so young. I don’t do work, read emails, or jump on social media until after my son goes to bed. Most people are surprised that as someone who works in social media, I actually spend very little time on it. Disconnecting during the day allows me to stay focused on what matters most and not get caught up in distractions, drama, and things I can’t control. I love reading with my little one. If I’m not falling asleep after that, I’ll attempt to finish up posts I’m working on, connect with friends or watch TV with my hubby.
