Occupation: I own a social media management agency which I launched a little more than 7 years ago. Prior to that, I worked as a Registered Nurse for over 30 years in the areas of neonatal ICU, dialysis, and case management. I’m finding that being a business owner is a refreshing change.
What did you want to be when you were a little girl?
A teacher or an archeologist. When I was 15, I was hospitalized for several weeks during the summer and became fascinated with the technology the nurses were using. The teaching profession was oversaturated at that time, so I chose to pursue nursing as a career instead.
What are some different jobs you’ve had in your life?
Really just the two – nursing and social media management. I went straight from high school to nursing school and began working as a nurse at the age of 19.
What do you work toward in your spare time?
Social media management requires constant learning because everything changes almost on a daily basis. I also like to study personal growth books and courses. I’m currently enrolled in Marie Forleo’s B School.
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Definitely, not a morning person but I don’t stay up that late either.
What are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of my children. They have grown up to be wonderful, intelligent, caring, and courageous adults, and I’m proud that I had a role in their development.
What are you known for?
I actually had to ask some friends about this because I wasn’t sure. The words that came up most were: compassion, early-adopter, techie, fun, inspirational, my cooking (in a good way, thankfully), kindness, inquisitiveness, joy, sentimentality, blogging, and generosity.
What inspires you?
I get a lot of inspiration from nature. I love flowers, trees, water, and animals. Happy, passionate, intentional people also inspire me – people who aspire to live great lives and not just sit back and let life happen to them.
Tell me something about you that most people don’t know.
I was great at catching frogs and toads! I was very tiny when I was young (in 7th grade, I was 3’8″ and weighed 57 pounds and still wore size 7 children’s clothing). In elementary school, I could fit into the drainage ditches and gather tadpoles for all my friends. I was also the one who stayed after class to feed the snakes and lizards.
Why did you apply to be an O Mag Insider?
I first heard of Oprah in 1984 when I was expecting my first child. I read an article about her in Cosmopolitan magazine. For some reason, I connected with her and have followed her ever since. I saw the request for Insider applicants in the January 2017 issue and I thought “why not? I’m a fan and I have at least a little bit of influence.” I really didn’t expect to be chosen but was thrilled to receive the email that said I had been selected. It’s been more than fun working with the magazine, but the best part of the experience has been the people I’ve met.
How do you live your best life?
I had a rough few years so I feel that I am just getting back to living my best life. Gratitude has been a huge part of that. Being grateful for what I did have and being intentional about being joyful every day has changed the way I live. I want to inspire women my age to continue to live life to the fullest and not just take the easy chair route to retirement.
What are you reading now?
I’m just finishing Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert.
