Additionally, as an O Mag Insider, I received the novel, An American Marriage, as a gift from O, The Oprah Magazine. However, the opinions below are strictly my own.
I honestly cannot remember the last time I read a book in one sitting. As the mother of three children, it’s always a miracle if I can even shower without interruption. This past weekend lent itself to indulging in such a luxury when my youngest was fighting a fever and just wanted to cuddle and sleep all day. My oldest two are away at college, so suffice it to say, there was not much in the way of distractions.
While Jack slept curled up next to me, I read An American Marriage by Tayari Jones from cover to cover. I did not want to put the book down as I imagined the characters of Celestial, Roy, and Andre playing out their love triangle in my mind. The characterizations were so vivid that when I finished, I could have sworn I knew these people in real life.
Set in the contemporary New South, Ron and Celestial start off as two African-American newlyweds at the wrong place at the wrong time. Ron is wrongfully accused and found guilty of rape and is sent to prison for 12 years. Thinking Ron is never going to be free from incarceration, Celestial begins a romantic relationship with their mutual friend Andre. And that’s just the beginning!
Tayari Jones has a gift with words. Not only did I feel like I knew the characters so well, but the plot kept me wanting more. I never knew what to expect, and I really didn’t know the outcome until the very last page.
The plot is beautifully interwoven with wonderful literary devices that give the story a rich and deep meaning. I don’t want to give too much away, but want you to know that I highly recommend Oprah’s 2018 Book Club Selection. It’s a delicious page-turner that will keep you from wanting more!
P.S. I sense a movie in the making!
